CarbonBetter verified a global software firm’s 2023 GHG inventory, ensuring protocol compliance.

A global software company specializing in mathematical and computational software partnered with CarbonBetter, a sustainability and decarbonization consulting firm, to verify its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions inventory for 2023. For this engagement, CarbonBetter conducted a thorough review of the company’s emissions inventory across all reported categories, ensuring alignment with industry best practices and the World Resources Institute (WRI)/World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) Greenhouse Gas Protocol. The verification process provided the company with actionable recommendations for future improvements.

Process

The project started with CarbonBetter reviewing reports and the company’s internal calculations. The review process consisted of verifying the system boundary definition, data completeness, accuracy of calculations, accuracy of emission factors used, reliability of assumptions, reporting methodologies, and its alignment with WRI/WBCSD GHG Protocol: Corporate Value Chain (Scope 3) Standard. For this engagement, the GHG inventory includes Direct (Scope 1), Energy Indirect (Scope 2), and Other Indirect (Scope 3) GHG emissions. This includes the following categories:

  • Category 1: Purchased Goods and Services;
  • Category 2: Capital Goods;
  • Category 3: Fuel- and Energy-Related Activities;
  • Category 5: Waste Generated in Operations;
  • Category 6: Business Travel;
  • Category 7: Employee Commuting; and
  • Category 13: Downstream Leased Assets.

“CarbonBetter conducted a thorough review of the company’s emissions inventory across all reported categories, ensuring alignment with industry best practices and the WRI/WBCSD Greenhouse Gas Protocol.”

🌍 Carbon markets can feel overwhelming—fragmented data, limited transparency, and conflicting advice make it hard to know where to start. In this webinar, our experts give a clear, practical introduction to the VCM.

CarbonBetter’s Approach

CarbonBetter completed the engagement by conducting a comprehensive internal verification process, assessing documentation, and confirming adherence to the estimation boundaries. The emission factors used in the calculations and methodology are verified with the WRI/WBCSD GHG Protocol v1.0. After this process, Carbonbetter conducted an independent Greenhouse gas inventory estimation and compared the results with the data company’s output. Finally, CarbonBetter held meetings with the client to resolve a few clarifying questions regarding the data provided, and we discussed the approach used with the client.

Recommendations

Without affecting the assurance, CarbonBetter provided a few recommendations to enhance the accuracy of the GHG accounting and to extend the calculations to all of the 15 scope 3 categories.

Conclusion

The GHG emissions inventory of the data company was thus verified for the year 2023. The outcome of the verification assessments was internally reviewed to ensure the approach was rigorous, transparent, and accurate.

Why is verifying a GHG inventory important for my business?

Verifying your greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory ensures accuracy, transparency, and alignment with industry standards like the WRI/WBCSD GHG Protocol. It strengthens stakeholder confidence, prepares your company for regulatory reporting, and helps identify opportunities for emissions reductions.

How does CarbonBetter’s verification process improve our emissions reporting?

CarbonBetter conducts a comprehensive review of your emissions inventory, verifying system boundaries, data completeness, calculation accuracy, and methodology alignment with global standards. We also provide actionable recommendations to improve future reporting and expand Scope 3 calculations.

What’s the difference between GHG inventory verification and third-party assurance?

Verification involves an independent review of emissions data to ensure consistency and accuracy, but it does not provide formal third-party assurance. However, our process can help prepare your company for third-party audits by improving data quality and alignment with best practices.

Can CarbonBetter help if we’re just starting to measure our GHG emissions?

Yes! Whether you’re developing your first GHG inventory or refining an existing one, we tailor our approach to meet your needs. We can assist with data collection, emissions calculations, and verification to ensure robust, credible reporting.

How can I get started with CarbonBetter for GHG inventory verification?

Contact us to discuss your company’s emissions reporting needs. We’ll assess your current inventory, outline a verification plan, and guide you through improving accuracy and completeness. Reach out today to get started!
