David supports data-driven projects, market growth, and regulatory compliance to help power positive impact.

By Chris Sylvester

Meet David Rios, a Business Operations Analyst at CarbonBetter. David helps keep things running smoothly behind the scenes, whether he’s building reports, supporting market expansion, or making sure regulatory requirements are met. His work gives him a front-row seat to the US retail energy market and lets him grow his data skills while helping the team make a real impact across multiple states.

David, what do you love about working at CarbonBetter?

I love getting a full view of the US retail energy market while learning and growing fast in data skills that really matter in today’s world. Our work impacts thousands of people across several states, and I get to be part of a team that’s sharp, collaborative, and genuinely fun to work with. It feels good to be part of something that makes a difference.

What does your day-to-day look like at CarbonBetter?

In BizOps, no two days are the same. We shift between projects depending on priorities. Some days we focus on key objectives like automating or building reports for different teams, other days we’re deep into market expansion with ad hoc analysis or research. We also handle regulatory tasks to make sure we stay compliant in the markets we operate in.

Do you have any personal or professional goals that you’d like to share?

Growing up in Colombia, I realized what a privilege it was to learn English and how much of a difference it can make, especially in Colombia. Just knowing the language can open doors and help someone build a decent living. That’s why one of my biggest dreams is to give back by providing access to education for people in need, especially in Medellín.

Where did you grow up? What’s something interesting about your hometown?

I grew up in Medellín, Colombia and some of my best memories are from playing soccer and basketball at both school and university level, and traveling around the country to compete. Believe it or not, some of Colombia’s top universities have a really solid level of basketball. It’s way more competitive than most people would expect (I would consider them around D2-D3 level).

Tell us about your family.

I’m the youngest of three, with two older sisters, so growing up, I watched a lot of their TV shows (unless my parents stepped in and told them to give me a break). I was definitely the “baby of the house,” and they never let me forget it. I looked up to my dad, who hustled every day to build his business and taught us what discipline really means. My mom supported him while doing her best to care for us with everything she had. It wasn’t always easy, but it was the best family I could’ve asked for! Now I’m building my own, with my fiancée, Verónica.

Do you have any pets? Tell us about them!

In my family, we’ve always had pets, actually, lots of them. But I’m especially fond of my cat, Eva. She sleeps next to me, gives me her paw, follows me around the house, and even fetches like a dog. The bond you build with a pet is like nothing else. They’re not just animals, they’re truly part of the family.

What are some of your hobbies?

I’m a huge sports fan, especially when it comes to soccer. In fact, I chose the city for my master’s based on it being the home of my favorite team – FC Barcelona. During weekends, instead of partying, I’d save my money to go watch them play live at Camp Nou. I was lucky enough to live just 20 minutes away on foot, so supporting the team in person became my favorite weekend plan.

Thanks for sharing, David! We are so lucky to work alongside you every day. Stay tuned for the next team feature in our Life @ CarbonBetter series.
