By Chris Sylvester

As Climate Services Manager at CarbonBetter, Johanna brings a passion for climate resilience and a steady hand to complex projects, helping clients navigate the risks of a changing climate. Whether she’s tackling scenario analyses for organizations like PortsToronto or collaborating with teammates to solve big challenges, Johanna leads with expertise, curiosity, and a deep commitment to impact. Based in a car-centric city but dedicated to sustainability, she finds ways to walk more, live lighter, and share her love for climbing, surfing, and her dog Naya—who’s known to crash a meeting or two. Let’s get to know Johanna.

Johanna, what do you love about working at CarbonBetter?

I love working at CarbonBetter because we’re a small, close-knit team where everyone genuinely supports each other. No matter the challenge, everyone pitches in to get things done, which creates a collaborative and dynamic environment. It’s inspiring to be part of a team that’s passionate about making a real impact, and I appreciate the opportunity to contribute in meaningful ways every day.

What does your day-to-day look like at CarbonBetter?

As a Climate Services Manager, my day-to-day is a mix of technical work, strategic planning, and problem-solving. Every day is different, but the common thread is working toward meaningful climate action.

Can you share a client project that was particularly impactful or challenging? What was your role, and what were the key takeaways from the experience?

One particularly impactful and challenging project was a Climate Scenario Analysis (CSA) we conducted for PortsToronto, which manages airports, ports, and marinas. The project focused on assessing climate-related risks, under various climate scenarios. My role involved identifying key vulnerabilities and quantifying risks to ensure readiness for climate resilience. This experience highlighted the importance of integrating scenario-based thinking and climate resilience into strategic planning, ultimately helping PortsToronto prioritize investments and enhance its long-term sustainability strategy.

Do you have any personal sustainability habits that are important to you?

Yes! I try to make sustainable choices part of my daily routine. I love walking, so even though I live in a very car-dependent city, I try to walk wherever I can, and I’m always looking for new ways to minimize my impact on the environment.

“I love working at CarbonBetter because we’re a small, close-knit team where everyone genuinely supports each other.”

Johanna on what she loves about working at CarbonBetter
Where did you grow up? What's something interesting about your hometown?

I grew up in Stockholm, Sweden. One interesting thing about Stockholm is that it’s built on 14 islands, so you’re never far from the water. It also has an incredible commitment to sustainability, from extensive public transit to urban green spaces, which definitely influenced my passion for climate action.

Do you have any pets? Tell us about them!

I have an Australian shepherd named Naya. She has a very big personality and likes to follow me around the house. She even tries to sit in on work meetings!

What is something that people are usually surprised to learn about you?

I used to be a competitive rock climber, and I was in the gym 4-5 days a week since I was nine.

What are some of your hobbies?

Rock climbing and surfing.

What's something you've learned recently, or something you want to learn?

I’m constantly learning more about climate risk assessment and adaptation. I love working on and learning about it in my free time and for work. As climate impacts intensify, helping businesses and communities understand their risks and build resilience is more important than ever.

What's something on your bucket list?

Climbing El Cap in Yosemite.

Thanks for sharing, Johanna! We are so lucky to work alongside you every day. Stay tuned for the next team feature in our Life @ CarbonBetter series.
